Non-Toxic Childcare & Early Learning Cleaning in Ballarat

Children in Ballarat early learning centres crawl on the floors, mouth the toys and press their hands against every surface they can reach. That changes what good cleaning has to look like — which is why GreenClean cleans childcare and daycare rooms with dry steam and activated water, keeping TGA-listed disinfectants for the tasks that genuinely need them.

Why residue is the real risk in an early learning room

In most workplaces, cleaning residue sits on surfaces nobody touches for long. A childcare centre is different. Infants crawl across floors, put toys and their own hands in their mouths, and spend hours at low benches and mats where residue concentrates. That physical reality is the reason low-tox cleaning matters here more than almost anywhere else.

Our position is simple. We do not use the phrase chemical-free, because it is not honest — TGA-listed disinfectants stay in the kit for disinfection-critical tasks like nappy-change areas and outbreak response. What we do commit to is no added synthetic chemicals on the surfaces children live on, and no hazardous residue left behind. The difference is deliberate and we can show you exactly where each method is used.

How the methods work

The program runs on three tools, each matched to a job.

Dry steam applies low-moisture thermal decontamination to mats, soft-play, timber furniture, cots and high-touch fittings. It lifts soil and treats surfaces at temperature without leaving a wet film or a chemical trace, which suits rooms that need to be back in use quickly.

Activated water covers the day-to-day surface cleaning and sanitising. Electrolysed water is made on site from water and a trace of salt, generating hypochlorous acid (HOCl) that reverts to salt water as it breaks down. It is GECA-certified and TGA-listed. Stabilised aqueous ozone reverts to oxygen and water. Neither adds a synthetic chemical load to the room.

Colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times keeps nappy-change, bathroom, kitchen and general zones strictly separated, so cross-contamination between areas is designed out rather than hoped away.

TGA-listed disinfectants are retained — and this matters — for disinfection-critical tasks and gastro or outbreak situations where a listed product is the right control. We are not pretending those tasks disappear. We are containing them to where they belong instead of spraying synthetic chemistry across every surface a toddler touches.

The ACECQA and staff-health angle

Early learning services carry clear hygiene obligations under the National Quality Framework, and cleaning is part of how you meet them. A low-tox program supports those expectations without contradicting them, because disinfection still happens where it is required — it is simply targeted.

There is also an occupational health case that early learning leaders should not ignore. Research from the ECRHS (Svanes et al. 2018) found lung-function decline in regular cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking. The AIHW attributes 9 to 15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure and names cleaning as a high-risk occupation. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals, and elimination sits at the very top of the WHS hierarchy of controls. Choosing methods that remove hazardous chemistry from the room protects your cleaners and your educators, not only the children. What a program looks like in Ballarat

Most Ballarat centres run on a daily clean after hours, with periodic dry-steam deep cleans scheduled through the term. Ballarat's cold, damp winters put real pressure on indoor air and on mould in wet areas and low-ventilation store rooms, so we build moisture-aware attention into bathrooms, nappy areas and mat storage rather than treating them as an afterthought.

A typical scope covers activity rooms, sleep and cot areas, nappy-change and bathroom zones, kitchen and bottle-prep surfaces, high-touch points, soft furnishings and outdoor transition areas. Toys and mouthed items get method-appropriate treatment. Frequencies are set around your enrolment, your room layout and your daily rhythm — we do not force a template onto a centre that does not fit it.

Pricing

On standard scopes, our pricing sits at parity with conventional cleaning. A modest premium of 10 to 15 per cent applies only on health-critical or rating-critical sites where the additional method discipline is doing measurable work. The walkthrough and quote are free, and we will tell you honestly which category your centre falls into before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really safe for babies who crawl and mouth toys

That is exactly the scenario the program is built for. Everyday surface cleaning uses activated water and dry steam that leave no hazardous residue, so there is nothing harmful sitting on floors, mats or toys children put in their mouths. TGA-listed disinfectants are kept for disinfection-critical tasks only, not sprayed across general play surfaces.

Can you still disinfect properly during a gastro outbreak

Yes. We retain TGA-listed disinfectants specifically for outbreak response and disinfection-critical areas like nappy-change zones. Low-tox does not mean under-disinfected — it means the strong chemistry is targeted to where it is genuinely needed rather than used everywhere by default.

Does a low-tox program meet our ACECQA hygiene obligations

It supports them without conflict. Disinfection still occurs where hygiene expectations require it, using listed products, while the rest of the centre is cleaned with methods that remove unnecessary chemical load. We are happy to walk through how each area is treated so your documentation and practice line up.

Will there be a chemical smell when children arrive in the morning

You should not expect one. Electrolysed water reverts to salt water and aqueous ozone reverts to oxygen and water, so there is no lingering synthetic fragrance or fume. Dry steam is low-moisture and leaves rooms ready for use quickly, which matters for early morning openings.

How much more does non-toxic childcare cleaning cost in Ballarat

On standard scopes it is at parity with conventional cleaning. A premium of 10 to 15 per cent applies only where a site is health-critical or rating-critical and the extra method discipline is doing measurable work. Your walkthrough and quote are free, so you will know the cost before deciding.
