A showroom lives or dies on how it looks under the lights. Smeared glass, dulled display cabinets and a chemical smell at the door all undercut a sale before a word is spoken. Conventional cleaning often trades one problem for another: the surface looks clean but carries a film of surfactant residue that attracts dust, fogs glass under downlights and leaves a lingering odour on soft furnishings and stock.

Why low-tox matters on a retail floor

Retail and showroom spaces put people and product in close, prolonged contact with whatever you clean with. Fragranced sprays, solvent-based glass cleaners and floor chemicals off-gas into a space where staff spend full shifts and customers browse for extended periods — often in air-conditioned rooms with limited fresh-air exchange.

The occupational evidence is hard to ignore. The ECRHS study (Svanes et al. 2018) found lung-function decline in regular cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking. The AIHW attributes 9–15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, with cleaning named as a high-risk occupation, and Deloitte Access Economics puts the cost of asthma to Australian employers at $526.7 million a year. Reducing what evaporates into your retail environment protects your cleaning crew, your own staff and the people you are trying to keep browsing.

Under ACCC guidance we are careful with language: this is cleaning with no added synthetic chemicals and no hazardous residue — not "chemical-free". Where a task is disinfection-critical, we retain TGA-listed products and use them deliberately, not by default.

How the methods work

We match the method to the surface:

• Electrolysed water for glass, display cabinets, counters and general hard surfaces — streak-free and residue-free.
• Stabilised aqueous ozone for broad-area sanitising and odour control, reverting to oxygen and water with nothing left on the surface.
• Dry steam for fixtures, grout, fitting-room detail and low-moisture thermal decontamination where you cannot risk wet stock nearby.
• Colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times so cross-contamination between areas like fitting rooms, food-adjacent zones and back-of-house is controlled.

Brisbane's humidity and summer storm season add a mould and odour pressure that many southern cities do not face. Residue-free finishes and thermal methods help here — there is no leftover organic film for mould to feed on, and dry steam addresses damp-prone detail without adding moisture.

The compliance and ratings angle

If your tenancy sits inside a rated building or a landlord with sustainability targets, low-tox cleaning does real work on paper as well as on the floor. GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit. WELL's Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction, and NABERS Indoor Environment tests for VOCs and formaldehyde — all of which favour a low-emission cleaning program.

There is a regulatory horizon too. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals. Elimination sits at the top of the WHS hierarchy of controls, so removing hazardous cleaning chemicals now is the most durable way to stay ahead of that change rather than managing exposure after the fact.
