Eco Retail & Showroom Cleaning
Retail floors and showrooms are worked hard and seen up close. Customers touch stock, lean on counters and breathe the air you condition for them, often for long browsing sessions. That puts a quiet double demand on cleaning: it has to look immaculate under bright display lighting, and it should not leave a chemical haze that greets people at the door. This guide explains how a low-tox program works for retail and showroom sites, which methods suit which surfaces, how cleaning connects to workplace safety and green ratings, and how to judge a provider before you sign.
Who needs low-tox retail cleaning
If people gather, dwell and touch, the case is strong. Fashion and department stores, homeware and furniture showrooms, car and appliance showrooms, shopping-centre tenancies, food-adjacent retail and boutique fit-outs all share the same pressures: high-touch surfaces, glass and gloss finishes that show every streak, and enclosed air that customers notice within seconds of walking in.
The people most exposed are your own staff and the cleaners themselves. Cleaning is a named high-risk occupation for respiratory harm. The ECRHS study by Svanes et al. (2018) found lung-function decline in cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking, and the AIHW attributes 9 to 15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure. For a retail employer that hires young, casual and often part-time floor staff, reducing airborne irritants is both a duty-of-care question and a practical one, because asthma costs Australian employers an estimated $526.7 million a year according to Deloitte Access Economics.
What a low-tox program covers
A proper retail program is built around the surfaces and moments that matter, not a single spray for everything.
- Entry glass, display windows and glazed partitions cleaned to a streak-free finish under strong light.
- High-touch points: door handles, EFTPOS terminals, counters, handrails, fitting-room hooks and benches.
- Hard floors, from polished concrete and timber to tile and vinyl, cleaned with low moisture to protect finishes.
- Fitting rooms and staff areas, where enclosed air and skin contact raise the bar for residue control.
- Amenities and back-of-house, disinfected where the task genuinely calls for it.
We use colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times so that cross-contamination between amenities and display areas is designed out, not left to chance. Products carry no added synthetic chemicals and leave no hazardous residue on the surfaces customers touch.
Method-by-method fit for retail
Electrolysed water (HOCl). Made on site from water and a trace of salt, it reverts to salt water after use. It is GECA-certified and TGA-listed, which means it can both clean and disinfect high-touch retail surfaces without leaving the harsh smell that puts customers off. This is our workhorse for counters, terminals and handrails.
Stabilised aqueous ozone. Reverts to oxygen and water, with no lingering scent. It suits general surface cleaning and floors across large showroom footprints where you want frequent passes without building up residue.
Dry steam. Low-moisture thermal decontamination reaches grout, fitting-room seams, upholstery on display furniture and detailing that liquids struggle with. Because it uses very little water, floors and stock stay dry and trading is not interrupted.
TGA-listed disinfectants, retained. For disinfection-critical tasks, particularly amenities, we keep TGA-listed products in the kit. Low-tox does not mean under-prepared. It means matching the tool to the risk.
The compliance and ratings angle
Workplace exposure rules are tightening. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals. Under the WHS hierarchy of controls, elimination sits at the top, ahead of ventilation or protective equipment. Choosing cleaning inputs that do not introduce hazardous substances in the first place is the most durable way to stay ahead of that change rather than managing exposure after the fact.
For landlords and larger retail groups, the ratings link is direct. GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit. The WELL Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction. NABERS Indoor Environment tests VOCs and formaldehyde, both of which conventional cleaning chemistry can drive up. A low-tox program supports all three without a separate procurement exercise.
What it costs
On standard retail scopes, our pricing sits at parity with conventional cleaning. There is no eco premium for cleaning a shop the way it should be cleaned. A surcharge of 10 to 15 per cent applies only on health-critical or rating-critical sites, where extra method, documentation or verification is genuinely required. The walkthrough and quote are free, so you can see the scope and the number before committing.
How to evaluate a provider: buyers' checklist
- Ask for certification specifics. GECA certification and TGA listing are verifiable. Vague eco claims are not.
- Watch the language. Under ACCC guidance, honest providers say no added synthetic chemicals or no hazardous residue, never chemical-free.
- Confirm disinfection is still available for amenities and disinfection-critical tasks.
- Check for colour-coded microfibre and documented dwell times, the basics of contamination control.
- Ask how the program maps to Green Star, WELL or NABERS if you report against them.
- Confirm low-moisture floor methods so trading and stock are not disrupted.
- Get the scope and pricing in writing after a site walkthrough, not over the phone.
Retail conditions vary by city. Coastal and humid centres carry more mould and moisture pressure on back-of-house and fitting-room surfaces, while dense CBD tenancies deal with heavy foot traffic and tight after-hours windows. Our accredited partner network runs the same standards locally, whether you are in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. You can also compare our full method range on the service overview.

Frequently asked questions
Is eco retail cleaning as effective as conventional cleaning?
Yes. Electrolysed water is GECA-certified and TGA-listed, meaning it both cleans and disinfects high-touch surfaces, and we retain TGA-listed disinfectants for amenities and disinfection-critical tasks. The difference is no added synthetic chemicals and no hazardous residue, not weaker performance.
Will low-tox cleaning leave streaks on display glass and gloss finishes?
No. Streak-free glass and glossy surfaces come from technique and microfibre discipline, not harsh chemistry. Our methods are chosen to finish cleanly under strong display lighting, which is often where conventional products leave visible film.
Does it cost more than standard retail cleaning?
On standard scopes, pricing is at parity with conventional cleaning. A surcharge of 10 to 15 per cent applies only on health-critical or rating-critical sites that need extra method or documentation. The walkthrough and quote are free.
How does this help with Green Star, WELL or NABERS?
GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit, WELL's Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction, and NABERS Indoor Environment tests VOCs and formaldehyde. A low-tox program supports all three without a separate procurement exercise.
Can you clean during trading hours without disrupting the store?
Often, yes. Dry steam and low-moisture methods keep floors and stock dry, and our approach is designed to work within tight after-hours or during-trade windows. We confirm the right schedule at the walkthrough based on your foot traffic and layout.
