Why low-tox is not a nice-to-have for retail

The health evidence for cleaning staff is sobering. The ECRHS study (Svanes et al. 2018) found lung-function decline in regular cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking. The AIHW attributes 9–15% of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, and names cleaning as a high-risk occupation. Deloitte Access Economics puts the cost of asthma to Australian employers at $526.7 million a year. Retail teams work alongside cleaning routines constantly, so the exposure question is not confined to the cleaner alone.

There is also a regulatory shift worth planning for. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals. Under the WHS hierarchy of controls, elimination sits at the top — removing a hazardous substance beats trying to manage it with ventilation or PPE. Choosing cleaning methods that don't introduce hazardous chemicals in the first place is the cleanest way to stay ahead of that change.

Where a task is disinfection-critical, we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and use them deliberately. We describe our work honestly: no added synthetic chemicals and no hazardous residue on standard surfaces — not "chemical-free".
